New! FEYNMAN AND THE BOMB - audio only
Here the American physicist Richard Feynman talks about how, although very young, he came to be involved in the WW2 atomic bomb project. He shares his thoughts on the moral dilemmas that faced him and his fellow scientists, including Robert Oppenheimer. This audio recording is largely outtakes from the filming for a BBC TV Horizon documentary called 'The Pleasure of Finding Things Out' (1981). The film negative and work print for this unused material were junked after transmission of the finished programme as was the practice at the time - film cans took up a lot of space! But you can see the accompanying picture for the sections included in the final film at the BBC Archive website if yo...

    I was just wondering about 2 things. I guess back in 1989 talking about closeted homosexuality has been a matter to avoid for such a documentary on BBC so I totally understand that this topic is omitted. But the fact that he has beaten up a 11 year old boy while he was a teacher in Austria, and that the whole issue has quite possibly been made disappear by his family (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haidabauer_incident) now that's a thing I really miss from this. I mean I do understand that such documentaries always elevate their subjects to a ridiculous level of intellectual and moral height. But still, even back in 1989 I think this should have been included. I doubt that this incident had not been known by the writers of this documentary. And I think that this incident does not mean that Wittgensteins work is not fantastic. On the contrary, these fucked up details on peoples lives always give a better picture. And its not worth making a documentary any other way. Otherwise its just a sculputre on a very famous street. And thats what sculptures are for.

      You have a good point. When we made the film there were stories around in the literature about W's possible homosexuality but with so little good evidence that we decided to leave it out - we would have to raise the question and then explain the lack of evidence, and in the time we had, we thought other things were more important. More evidence has emerged in the years since, and I think that were we to make a biographical film now, the question would be addressed. Thank you for your interest and your thoughtful comments.

    • @eriksumo
      @eriksumo 3 дня назад

      @@ChristopherSykesDocumentaries Thank you for your reply. But as I said, my concern is more about the incident which is I gues more related to his uncontrollable temper, the story in which a 11 years old boy has been beaten up by him in school. Must have roughed up the little boy really well to cause a scandal in far-from-liberal 1920s Austria don't you think? The wikipedia article tells about this story in details. Also the thing that W's wealthy family has quite possibly paid hush money to make the thing disappear is quite weird and interesting to me.

    I'm sure a bike pump gets hot because the air maintains the same energy level but you're squeezing that same amount of energy into a smaller volume which concentrates the energy and we feel this as the gas heating up. The piston hitting the air molecules doesn't add that much extra energy

    • @micheals1992
      @micheals1992 16 дней назад

      Similar to how an air conditioner/heat pump works although that also takes advantage of phase changes at different pressures.

    • @tjmhay
      @tjmhay 16 дней назад

      He's describing as you say, but he's using the piston as the point of reference for the volume change as it's convenient for the analogy of atom impacts and 'jiggling'.

    • @federicociampiconi2852
      @federicociampiconi2852 14 дней назад

      Your reasoning is wrong here. If it were just a matter of density it wouldn't heat up, by compressing the gas you are actually speeding up the molecules as temperature is proportional to the average square velocity. You can test this just by noting that when you pump you feel resistance, a force, which is just the amount of momentum variation in the unit of time of the molecules. In terms of the first law of thermodynamics, Force times length-variation is the amount of energy you are adding into the gas.

    • @TeeTee-cc7xz

Not only as a result of direct fighting but also as the result of the horrific medical experiments and tortures that the japanese did in china. Add the fear of another pearl harbor like attack and the fear of the germans developing their own nuclear weapons. And it's no wonder that history turned the way it did.
